How can yoga help you?

In modern times, greater physical and emotional demands are constantly placed upon many areas of life. The result: more and more people suffer from phyical and mental tensions such as stress, anxiety, insomnia, and there is an imbalance in physical activity and proper exercise. This is why methods and techniques for the attainment and improvement of health, as well as physical, mental and spiritual harmony, are of great importance, and it is exactly in this respect that Yoga comprehensively offers an aid to help one’s self. The word ‘Yoga’ originates from Sansskrit and means ‘to join, to unite’]. Yoga exercises have a holistic effect and bring body, mind consciousness and soul into balance. In this way Yoga assists us in coping with everyday demands, problems and worriees. Yoga helps to develop a greater understanding of our self, the purpose of life and our relationship to the world around us.

The main goals of Yoga are:

  1. Physical Health Mental Health
  2. Social & Environmental Health
  3. Spiritual Health

The Swiss-bo Physician, Paracelsus, said ‘Health isn’t everything, but without health everything is nothing’]. To preserve and restore health, Yoga offers physicial exercises (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), relaxation techniques and meditation. The physical yoga postures are beneficial for the muscles, joints, cardiovascular system, nervous system, lymphatic system, as well as the mind, psyche and Chakras (energy centres).

They are psychosomatic exercises, which strengthen and balance the entire nervous system and harmonies and stabilize the practitioners state of mind. The effects of these exercises are a sense of contentment, clarity of mind, relaxation and a feeling of inner freedom and peace.Periods of relaxation are included at the beginning and end of each class, as well as between the individual exercises.

By developing the ability to relax, the feeling for one’s own body is deepened. Physical and mental relaxation are prerequisites for the correct performance of all Yoga exercises and it is only in this way that the effects of the Yoga practice completely unfold. The breath plays an important role in the practice of the physical postures. With coordination of breath and movement, the Yoga practices become harmonious, the breath deepens of its own accord and the body’s circulation and metabolism is stimulated. Use of the breath greatly enhances muscle relaxation by concentrating on tense areas of the body and consciously relaxing those parts with each exhalation.

How are Yoga and Gymnastics different:

In contrast to gymnastic exercises, Yoga is practiced slowly to enable mental focus and a conscious understanding of the movement. The number of exercises practiced is not important, but rather the quality of performance. Before, after and between the exercises a period of conscious physical and mental relaxation should be included. The objective of the asana is not the conversion of bottled-up energy or tension into movement, rather it is to harmonies the body and mind by consciously observing the physical and mental process as each movement or relaxation is practiced. The body does not become tired or exhausted through the practice of Yoga. On the contrary, with energy recharged, one feels rested and refreshed. Yoga calms the nervous system, stimulates the glands, increases the capacity of the breath and frees one from physical and mental stress. The mind becomes relaxed, calm and clear.
